Can You Believe it’s February?

2015 – Wow! January has already come and gone and February is already 1 week over! They say time flies when you’re having fun! Am I having fun? Some days I would say yes and others I would say nope!

I retook my Spanish Language exam in the midst of doctors’ appointments and trips to the ER to figure out why I couldn’t swallow, and am still waiting to find out those results. I now know that my esophagus doesn’t like to work properly in the middle 30-40% of the time, but they are not 100% as to the cause yet so off to my docs I will go! So yes, good and bad days. But the difference this year? I am WAY MORE POSITIVE! I made some changes to the way I think. I can control some things and I can’t control others, so no more worrying about what I can’t control. I have my goals and dreams, and I will keep plugging away at them, and though I know they will take time I will get there!

Coming up there is my last subject-field exam, which I am planning for April which means I really ought to get that study plan in place (on my “to-do” for this weekend). I also have a TOEFL class to start taking – need to add that into the calendar. I’m thinking TV will be on the backburner for a while. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though.

Has the year already started flying by for you? Where are you at in your goals for 2015? I would love to know! Share in your comments below.

My journey continues

What exactly am I doing to get healthy, you may ask? I believe I mentioned in an earlier post the things that I had done to lose weight a few years ago: weight watchers, p90x and last year a stint with CrossFit and Paleo. The one I keep coming back to is BeachBody. So there must be a reason. When I decided to be honest with myself and make the choices I had to make to get myself healthy again, I decided to go with what I knew I liked, but I also knew I needed some extra accountability.

I chose Focus T-25 because it was ONLY 25 minute. Even I can manage that, right?!? Well, let me tell you I’m about to head into week 3 and I’ve lost 9lbs already. Well, I’m not going to lie some of that is from being sick, but more than half is from working out and eating healthy. I tell you this because I don’t believe health should be some well-kept secret that only those with tons of money can have. Being healthy is for everyone and it actually will end up saving you money because less visits to the doctors and when you plan out your meals you tend to spend less at the grocery store and you have less waste because you eat what you buy.

Sounds so simple, huh? Well, when I decided to try Focus T-25 I decided to sign up as a coach. I figured if I could help others while I helped myself that was a win-win. And it is because it keeps me ACCOUNTABIE!! Nothing is worse than not having like-minded people around you to help you with support and motivation. And, I won’t lie a little extra money helps too! So, if you want to get healthy with me, let me know. You can join a challenge group – you get me as your coach pushing you forward, support, motivation, and advice. Or you can step it up notch and be your own coach helping others – I will be there for you through that as well – we have a great team dedicated to helping new coaches.

Talk to you soon,

New Opportunities

New Opportunities don’t come along everyday as we all know. So while this one is requiring intense training, without pay, and time commitments that I am struggling with I believe the sacrifice will be important in the long-term. Just to be clear the struggle comes from fitting in training around studying for my Comprehensive Exams which are less than one month away and reading for my first Oral-Subject Field exam which is just over one month away – and doing this while preparing to move August 31.

Also, the potential is there to do what I love – WRITE and earn money doing it! That in and of itself is an important long term goal of this new opportunity.

I could easily find some things wrong and yes there are cons since it breaks into my library time and I am still job searching for guaranteed full time work since I left that place of few good memories – but my health was more important, but I digress and this is not the forum for that story.

Push forward in whatever your endeavors are – Me? I am a writer and so I must write – and take any new opportunity that comes along. If I am not writing then I am not being true to myself and that is bad for us all!!

P.S. The fruits of online training are a published piece with my own byline!!

Putting it all together

Finally… the ideas are flowing but now there is not enough time in the day – one week of work left and 4 exams to study for make it difficult to write the more pleasurable pieces. I have homework to be doing now but I would much rather work on my blog and my other projects; i have exams to study for yet I would simply like to skip to my dissertation proposal; and life is all about choices: the easy ones, the hard ones, and the ones we put off making 🙂

So today I will put aside my personal projects in favor of being a responsible adult (at least until I go to my best friend’s sons high school graduation party later) and work on homework and begin my paper for the course I am enrolled in.

Ah the joys of being an adult with goals!!

Enjoy your weekend everyone no matter where you are and what you are doing!!

Have you ever….

In 9 days I am shaving my head.  Yep.  You read correctly; I am shaving my curly, long, and thick hair.  Why would I do such a crazy thing you might ask?  It is part of One Missions Kid’s Cancer Buzz Off taking place at Gillette Stadium on June 8, 2014.

My husband and I have created our own team, “The Bald and the Beautiful” which stemmed from him deciding on Easter that he wanted to shave his head for the summer – he did it last summer and I don’t like it (his family teases him too), so I made a deal with him – he could shave his head if he raised money for this cause I had heard about on the radio – The Kid’s Cancer Buzz Off!  Then I decided it would be much more powerful if I, a woman with long, thick, curly hair joined in and thus our team was created.

People have asked me why (including my mother) and it’s hard to put into words exactly, yet why not seems to be not enough, but let’s think about it and break it down for a minute:

  1. I have a choice – so often cancer patients do not
  2. Mine will grow back – yes, a cancer patients will eventually but mine will start that day
  3. My hair is not who I am
  4. People will be bound to ask me why I shaved my head and then I can tell them which raises more awareness
  5. I honestly cannot think of a reason NOT to do it or at least I can’t think of any reasons that are not shallow

Am I worried – yes!  I would be lying if I said I wasn’t.  I haven’t been bald since I was 2 and I am now 36 living in a society where appearances do matter and I am in the process of job hunting since we’re moving, so yes there is that hint of concern that nags me.  And yes, I do love my thick, curly hair and I will be sad if it doesn’t grow back the same – also a tad scared of the greys ( :p) but these are shallow reasons – at least the personal ones are.

This is a great cause and there is still time to be a part of it – share this blog post, join our team and help us raise money and awareness, or make a donation if you are so inclined, but most importantly share!!

Thank you,

Sara

Getting back on track

So here’s to another resolution:  I WILL BLOG!!  I miss my blogs, I really, really do!  This past school year has been insane:

  • I got married 🙂
  • I’ve now finished 6 PhD courses
  • I’ve created my reading lists for my Subject-field exams
  • I’ve put together my dissertation committee and had it approved
  • I’ve taken my language exam (though don’t think I passed and will have to retake)
  • I’ve changed positions at my job

And that is only the start as I am about to begin my final course work and then I have my exams this summer so I can be ABD by September 1.  We are also moving so all the “to-dos” that come with that are in the works as well – 700 miles is a long way to go, but ti’s worth it!!

So, while I haven’t been posting I have been writing and working tirelessly towards other goals that are better for our family.  I do want to get back into the habit of posting once per week but with the craziness of exams about to start and this final course oh, and the end of the school year approaching I may have to settle for every other week 🙂

Have a great Memorial Day weekend everyone!
